Coverage products commonly considered
Most surf instructor operations consider one or more of these coverage types:
Hypothetical claim scenarios
These are hypothetical examples only. Actual coverage depends on the policy form, exclusions, and carrier determination.
- A beginner loses control of a rented board in the shore break and it strikes another beachgoer, who alleges injury. General liability is generally intended to respond to allegations of this nature in the event of a covered claim.
- A student trips over gear staged on the sand during a group lesson and fractures an ankle. The GL policy is generally intended to address covered claims arising from instruction operations.
Frequently asked questions
Does this cover lessons on a public beach?
Coverage for instruction at a public beach or third-party location depends on the policy form. Some carriers extend coverage to off-site or unscheduled locations automatically; others require an endorsement or a scheduled location. Many municipalities also require a permit and proof of insurance to operate on the beach — confirm both before you teach.
Are the surfboards I rent to students covered?
General liability is generally intended to address third-party injury and property damage, not damage to your own boards and gear. Coverage for your equipment is typically added as inland marine (scheduled equipment). Disclose your rental fleet so it can be addressed.
What if the beach or city requires me to name them on my policy?
A municipality or beach concession often requires you to carry your own general liability and name them as an additional insured on your policy. Being listed on someone else's policy is not the same as having your own — your GL policy is generally intended to protect you.
