Wyoming auto insurance
Wyoming requires 25/50/20 liability. The statute says nothing about the wind, which is the single most Wyoming-specific thing about driving here.

Three reasons Wyoming drivers re-shop their auto policy
- 1
Wind is a driving peril here, not weather trivia
I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins closes to light and high-profile vehicles regularly through the winter, and blowover crashes are a genuine Wyoming claim category. A blowover is collision. A rock or debris driven into the windshield by wind is comprehensive. They carry different deductibles on almost every policy.
- 2
The nearest body shop may be two hours away
A breakdown outside Lusk, Baggs or Shoshoni is a long tow, and roadside limits are often written in dollars rather than miles. A limit set for a city does not cover a Wyoming tow. Ask what the towing limit is in dollars, and ask what rental coverage pays per day and for how long, because the repair will not be quick either.

Antelope and deer strikes are routine and they are comprehensive
Wyoming reports one of the higher animal-collision rates in the country, and the strikes cluster at dawn and dusk along US-26, US-287 and the Wind River corridor. These are comprehensive claims, not collision. A liability-only policy pays for neither, which is the calculation to make before dropping comprehensive on an older truck.
Proof of coverage and the gap that catches people out
Wyoming requires liability coverage and proof of it, and driving without it carries fines and the prospect of losing driving privileges until you file proof. The common failure is not deliberate: somebody switches carriers, the new policy starts a day after the old one ended, and a traffic stop or a claim lands in that window. Make the effective dates overlap.
Hail, gravel and windshields
Summer hail on the eastern plains damages parked vehicles and is a comprehensive claim. Gravel chip from county roads and the sand put down for winter traction is the other half of the same bucket. Several carriers sell a glass endorsement with a lower deductible, which in Wyoming is worth pricing rather than assuming.
Trailers, stock and towing something expensive
A utility trailer, a horse trailer or a camper is not automatically covered by the policy on the truck. Liability generally follows the towing vehicle, but physical damage to the trailer itself usually has to be scheduled. Say what you tow and roughly what it is worth, and say whether it carries livestock, because that changes the liability question.
Have these ready when you call
Five minutes on the phone goes faster with the paperwork in front of you.
- Year, make, model and VIN for every vehicle
- Driver license numbers for everyone who will drive
- The exact date your current policy ends, so the new one starts without a gap
- Annual mileage — the real figure, since Wyoming distances add up fast
- Whether vehicles are garaged or parked outside
- Any ticket or at-fault accident in the last three to five years
- Every trailer or camper you tow, and roughly what each is worth
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum car insurance in Wyoming?
Liability of at least $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage — written 25/50/20. That is the legal floor for driving, not a recommendation.
Is a blowover on I-80 covered?
Wind pushing a vehicle off the road and rolling it is generally a collision claim. Debris driven into the vehicle by wind is generally comprehensive. The two carry separate deductibles on most policies.
Is hitting an antelope collision or comprehensive?
Animal strikes are generally handled under comprehensive, which usually carries a different deductible from collision. In Wyoming they are frequent enough to weigh before dropping comprehensive.
How much towing coverage do I need in Wyoming?
Enough for the distance to the nearest shop that can actually do the work, which in much of the state is well beyond a standard limit. Ask for the limit in dollars and compare it to a realistic tow.
