Three reasons Utah drivers are re-shopping right now
- 1
The legal minimum changed, and older policies renewed into it
Utah’s minimum liability limits moved to $30,000 per injured person, $65,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage for policies issued or renewed on or after 1 January 2025. Policies written at the old 25/65/15 came up to the new floor at renewal rather than immediately. If you have not looked at your declaration page since 2024, the limits on it are not the limits you have.
- 2
PIP is required here, and it pays before fault is settled
Utah requires at least $3,000 of personal injury protection on every auto policy. It pays medical expenses for you and your passengers without waiting for anyone to be found at fault. It is a low floor, and raising it is one of the cheaper upgrades on a Utah policy — worth pricing if you carry a high-deductible health plan.
- 3
Wasatch Front traffic is dense and the canyon roads are not
I-15 and the Salt Lake valley produce the low-speed, high-repair-cost collisions. The canyons — Little Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood, Parleys and Provo — produce the winter slides, the rockfall and the deer strikes. Those are different claims under different parts of the policy, and a liability-only policy pays for none of the second group.
What the new limits actually mean in dollars
30/65/25 is $30,000 for one injured person, $65,000 for everyone hurt in the crash, and $25,000 for the property you damage. Utah also allows a single combined limit as an alternative structure. The property-damage figure is the one to look at hardest: a late-model SUV can exceed $25,000 on its own, and raising that number is normally inexpensive compared with what it protects.
Canyon driving, chains and the two deductibles
UDOT posts traction requirements on the Cottonwood canyons through the ski season, and sliding into a bank or a guardrail is a collision claim. Rockfall onto the vehicle, a deer at dusk on US-40, and hail in a Davis County summer storm are all comprehensive. Those two coverages carry separate deductibles on nearly every policy, which surprises people at claim time.
Rideshare, delivery and the airport run
A personal auto policy generally stops covering you the moment you log into a driving app and wait for a request. Some carriers sell an endorsement for that window; others will not write the car at all if it is used that way. Salt Lake has a lot of app driving and a lot of airport runs. Say it on the application rather than at claim time.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum car insurance in Utah now?
$30,000 per injured person, $65,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage — 30/65/25 — for policies issued or renewed on or after 1 January 2025. The previous minimum was 25/65/15. Utah also requires at least $3,000 of personal injury protection.
Did my old policy change automatically?
Policies written at the old limits came up to the new minimum at renewal rather than on 1 January. Check the declaration page you were most recently sent rather than the one you remember.
Is Utah a no-fault state?
Utah requires PIP but keeps an at-fault liability system with a limited threshold for suing over general damages. PIP means your own medical bills get paid while fault is sorted out.
Is hitting a deer collision or comprehensive?
Animal strikes are generally handled under comprehensive, which usually carries a different deductible from collision. On US-40 and the canyon roads this is a frequent claim.
