Why a Duffy is not just another 21-footer

Duffy Electric Boat Company has been building electric boats in Southern California since the 1970s, and the boats have their own particular set of considerations.

It is an electric boat, not a small powerboat

A Duffy runs on a battery bank and an electric drive rather than an outboard, and it cruises at harbour speed. Rating forms built around horsepower and hull speed do not describe it well, so the conversation matters more than the form.

The battery bank is a real part of the value

Batteries, charger and drive represent a meaningful share of what the boat is worth, and replacing them is not a small job. Make sure the value you insure reflects the whole boat rather than just the hull and canopy.

It lives in the water, usually in a slip

Most Duffys sit in a slip year round rather than on a trailer, which changes the exposure. Where the boat is kept is one of the first things the carrier will ask about.

The canopy, upholstery and joinery

Wood trim, cushions and the canopy take the weather and are commonly what gets damaged. Worth confirming how the policy treats them.

Guests aboard

A Duffy is a boat people entertain on, often with more people aboard than a runabout of the same length. Liability limits deserve a moment of thought rather than a default.

Frequently asked questions

Does homeowners insurance cover a Duffy?

Homeowners policies generally cover only small, low-powered boats and provide very limited watercraft liability, often with a sub-limit that would not go far on a boat of this value. A dedicated watercraft policy is generally what responds properly. Check your own policy form, since the limits vary.

Do I need insurance if my Duffy never leaves the harbour?

Most marinas and slip agreements require liability coverage as a condition of the slip, whatever your cruising range. Beyond that, harbour traffic is exactly where minor contact with other boats and docks happens.

What horsepower should I put down for a Duffy?

Duffy electric drives are rated modestly, commonly around six horsepower, which surprises people used to outboards. Horsepower is optional on our form for exactly this reason. If you are unsure, leave it blank and mention it on the call.

Is the trailer covered?

If you have one, a trailer can usually be added to the policy. Many Duffy owners keep the boat in a slip and have no trailer at all, which is worth saying on the call.

Which Duffy models can be insured?

The lineup including the Snug Harbor 16 and 18, the Classic 21, the Bay Island 22 and the Cuddy Cabin 22 is all insurable, along with older Duffy models. Have the year and length ready.

I keep my Duffy in Newport Harbor. Does that matter?

Yes, where the boat is kept is a significant rating factor, and it is not always the same as where you live. Southern California harbours, Lake Havasu and inland lakes all look different to a carrier, so give the actual mooring location.
